Why we needed new flooring for our backyard court
So our old volleyball court was basically concrete with some cracked paint. Every time we played, someone ended up with sore knees or twisted ankles. Our neighbor’s kid actually scraped his elbow bad last month diving for a ball. That’s when I decided we gotta fix this mess before someone breaks something important.
Getting the portable flooring tiles
I found these plastic interlock tiles made for outdoor sports after digging around online. Called the supplier Tuesday morning, guess what? They delivered Thursday while I was eating lunch! Each tile felt lighter than my cat but looked tough. Surprised me how they just dumped twenty boxes in my driveway. No instructions though. Typical.
Prepping the garbage surface
Our court looked like a war zone first. Used a rusty push broom to sweep away all the leaves and twigs stuck in the cracks. Found three dead bugs under the net post – gross. Then I got the garden hose and sprayed everything down till it looked shiny. Left it baking in the sun for two hours while I ate an apple. Dry ground matters big time they said.
Laying those interlock puzzle pieces
Started from one corner like playing giant Lego. Snap-together thing actually worked better than Ikea furniture! Slid the first tile into place and went row by row. Had to shove real hard when pieces didn’t wanna lock – stomped on ’em with my work boots. Sweated through my shirt but felt awesome seeing that sweet green rectangle grow.
Fixing the stupid edges
Everything was smooth until the last row. Too long by like four inches. Grabbed my old wood saw from the garage – didn’t even know if it would cut plastic. Made some terrible squealing noises but sliced right through! Little plastic crumbs flew everywhere. Then just popped those custom pieces in the gaps. Pro tip: measure twice before cutting unless you love vacuuming glittery plastic dust.
Final checks before test drive
Walked over every single tile stomping like an angry giant. Kicked the corners hard to make sure they wouldn’t pop loose. Water tested with my hose – flowed right through the holes like it should. Saw one loose tile near the left boundary line so I punched it down with my fist. Ready for action.
The victory jump test
Called over my nephew to try it first. Kid did his basketball jump shot celebration and landed smack in the middle. Tiles didn’t budge an inch! Our first game lasted three hours – zero falls, zero complaints, just pure sliding on that bouncy surface. Totally worth the sweaty afternoon. Best part? When rain came later, water drained straight through. Now I just brush off leaves after storms. Solid win.
