Okay folks, today I tried playing volleyball indoors on my hardwood living room floor – wild idea, right? Grabbed my old volleyball from the garage dusted it off. First thing: cleared all furniture towards the walls. Coffee table? Shoved it. Rug? Rolled up tight. Took forever making sure every damn corner was safe.
The Slide Test Disaster
Started with easy bumps against the wall. Ball felt heavier than I remembered! Then tried a dive – big mistake. My knee slid like it was on ice. Bam! Smacked right into the bookshelf. Got a gnarly bruise now. Hardwood is crazy slippery with sports socks.
- Lesson 1: Wear proper shoes or die sliding
- Lesson 2: Bookshelves bite back
- Lesson 3: Volleyballs hurt bouncing off crown moldings
Switched to grippy sneakers after that. Taped newspapers to the bookshelf edges too. Looked trashy but who cares?
Actual Drills Attempt
Set up targets using masking tape on the floor. Serving practice first – smacked balls flew everywhere. One nearly took out my floor lamp! Serves kept bouncing way higher than on sand courts. Gotta aim lower than usual.
Tried setting next. Focused on gentle touches since ball bounces like crazy on hardwood. My knuckles got red from the sting. After twenty minutes, my back was killing me – turns out bending low constantly on hardwood wrecks you faster.
The Aftermath
Sweat pools everywhere. Floor’s littered with tape shreds and dusty footprints. Still, got decent practice on my float serves! Wrist feels sore though. Whole session lasted maybe 40 minutes tops.
Big takeaways?
- Hardwood volleyball = slidefest without proper shoes
- Furniture clearance takes longer than the actual practice
- Ball reacts like it’s on steroids compared to grass
- Only good for serving/light ball control – anything else destroys your joints
Would I do it again? Honestly – only if it’s pouring rain outside and I’m desperate to touch a ball. Garage setup next time maybe? But hey – another experiment checked off!
