So I’ve been wanting an indoor basketball court for ages. We got this big empty space in the basement that’s perfect for it. Started sketching plans last Thanksgiving while everyone was watching football.
First Step: Clearing The Mess
Had to empty the whole damn basement first. Took me three weekends hauling junk to the garage sale pile. Found my old Rollerblades covered in dust. Almost broke my neck tripping over a rusty toolbox.
Wood Selection Headaches
Went to Home Depot like five times comparing planks. Maple’s too expensive, oak feels like concrete. Ended up with birch – cheaper but still tough. Sales guy kept pushing bamboo like some infomercial host.
Leveling Nightmare
The floor sloped like crazy. Had to build this wooden frame and pour self-leveling concrete. Measured wrong the first time – ended up with puddles like a kiddie pool. Took three bags and a whole Saturday to fix.
Laying Those Damn Boards
Thought I’d knock this out quick. Nope. Each plank needed spacing and nailing. Knees were killing me after two rows. Used this nail gun that kept jamming – nearly threw it through the window.
The Finishing Touch
Sanding took FOREVER. Dust everywhere even with plastic sheets. Had to wear this dorky respirator that fogged up my glasses. Applied four coats of finish – waited two days between layers like watching paint dry. Literally.
Finally Shooting Hoops
Got my nephew to help mount the backboard. First dribble – that sweet hardwood echo! Ball bounces perfect, better than the YMCA. Wife came down yelling when I did a layup at midnight. Totally worth it.
What I’d Do Different:
- Rent professional sanding tools instead of my crappy hand sander
- Buy extra 10% materials for screw-ups
- Bribe buddies with beer instead of soloing the concrete leveling
Sore as hell now but damn it feels good. Kids been down there every afternoon. Still finding sawdust in my hair though.
