Okay, so I finally got around to installing that cushioned basketball parquet flooring in my garage-turned-mini-court today. Been staring at those boxes for weeks! Here’s exactly how it went down, step by painful step.

Getting My Crap Together First

Dragged all the flooring boxes inside first – super important to let them sit for 48 hours like the instructions said. Humidity messes these things up bad. Meanwhile, I cleared the whole floor space like crazy: swept, vacuumed, even wiped it down with a damp cloth. Any pebble left behind would probably make a bump later.

Stuff I used:

  • Rubber mallet (borrowed from Dave next door)
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Straight edge/level
  • Utility knife with extra blades (went through three!)
  • Those spacers that came with the flooring

Starting Point Matters

Measured the room corner to corner – thank god it was almost square. Chose the longest straight wall as my starting line. Laid down the foam underlayment first, just rolling it out and trimming edges. That stuff’s tricky; wrinkles will haunt you if you don’t smooth it real good.

Put the spacers against the wall (about finger-width gap) and laid my first board groove-side facing me. Tapped it gently with the mallet to snug it up. Added the second board right away, angling it into the first one’s groove until it clicked. That satisfying “thunk” never gets old!

The Main Grind

Worked row by row, making sure every tongue went deep into the groove. Staggered the joints – no H-shaped seams allowed! When I hit the wall, measured the gap, marked the plank with pencil, cut it with the utility knife using the straight edge. Pro tip: score deep and snap, don’t try to cut through in one go.

Hit a snag at the doorway. Had to notch around the frame – traced the shape onto the plank with paper scrap like a stencil. Messed up the first cut (oops), but second one slid right under the trim perfectly.

Final Stretch Drama

Last row was the worst. Had to measure the skinny gap, rip planks lengthwise with the knife. Slide them in at an angle with the spacers still in. Pulled out the spacers carefully – heard one snap (cheap plastic!). Mallet-tapped the entire perimeter one last time to lock everything down tight.

Done and Dusted

Kicked off my shoes and walked on it – that cushioned bounce feels amazing underfoot. Definitely took me way longer than I thought (like 5 hours!), mostly from double-checking cuts. But hey, no glue, no nails, just sweat and swearing. Totally worth it for that pro-court feel at home.
