Getting Started with My Garage Project

Alright so last weekend I decided it was finally time to turn my dusty old garage into a home basketball court for my kids. I bought these supposed “pro-grade” rubber-backed maple wood planks that claimed to snap together easily. Opened the first box and man those things were heavy!

The First Big Mistake

Started by just slapping them on the concrete floor without checking anything. Bad idea! Three rows in, everything looked crooked as hell. Had to pull up all those planks and actually measure properly. Used chalk lines this time like I should’ve done from jump. Lesson learned: never skip measuring.

The Snap-Trap Situation

Thought the tongue-and-groove system would be simple – just click and done right? Wrong! Halfway through, two planks refused to lock tight. Ended up using my rubber mallet way too hard and CRACK went the edge of one board. Panicked for five minutes then realized I could hide it near the wall corner. Felt like an idiot but kept going.

Dealing With Odd Corners

Hit the garage support column and froze. How you supposed to cut perfect curves in hardwood? My jigsaw kept splintering the maple. After wrecking two pieces, finally figured out to cut slowly with masking tape on the lines. Looked messy up close but whatever, nobody’s gonna notice during layups.

The Final Stretch Drama

Last row was a nightmare. Didn’t leave enough expansion gap so planks got jammed against the wall. Had to remove like five pieces again to trim them shorter. My back was killing me from crawling around! Finally jammed that last piece in with a pry bar – not pretty but it worked.

What Actually Worked

  • Putting down moisture barrier first saved me from damp issues
  • Using spacers religiously after the crooked start
  • The rubber mallet with wood block trick for stubborn joints
  • Extra boxes for screw-ups (used two full extra boxes!)

Finished court looks decent from standing height anyway. Kids love it though! Would I do it again? Heck no – next time I’m paying the pros. But hey, learned tons and got a fun story out of it.
