Man, let me tell ya about this gym floor nightmare. It all started when I looked down one Tuesday morning while lifting weights. Coffee stain the size of Texas, dead spots where they slid weights around, and these weird sticky patches near the water fountain. Knew right then the beast needed attention.
The Tear Down & Dust Apocalypse
First thing Saturday, I dragged every piece of equipment outta there. Felt like moving a mountain by hand. Then came the tape and plastic sheeting. Covered doorways, vents, windows – tried turning my gym into a biohazard zone. Didn’t work. Dust got EVERYWHERE.
- Rented the beast: Walked into Big Joe’s Tool Rental expecting a little sander. Guy wheels out this yellow monster looking like a tank. “Heavy duty gym model,” he grunts. Nearly killed my back loading it.
- Sanding saga: Started with coarse grit. Thing vibrated so hard my fillings rattled. Dust flew through the plastic! Spent more time hacking up dust bunnies than sanding. Did three passes total – coarse, medium, fine. Took two full days just for this step. Arms felt like overcooked noodles Sunday night.
The Sticker Shock and Nasty Chemicals
Monday rolled around, body screaming, wallet about to scream louder. Headed to that fancy flooring supply place downtown.
- Sealer Shock: Asked for sealer. Guy points to a $95 five-gallon pail. “Need at least two for your size floor,” he says. Nearly choked.
- Poly Panic: “Now the good finish,” he smirks, leading me to shiny gallons of water-based polyurethane. “$52 a pop,” he chirps. Did the math in my head. Another three gallons needed. Felt sweat dripping down my back that wasn’t from the gym.
- Hidden Demons: Found spots where the old finish just died during sanding. Had to hand-scrape corners until my wrists cried. Bought a scraper kit and special edge sander attachment nobody mentioned before. $43 vanished for those “little extras.”
The Final Push and Happy (Tired) Dance
Applied the sealer Wednesday. Looked like pouring milk on concrete – soaked right in. Next came the poly. That stuff stank worse than old gym socks! Had to do thin coats, let it dry overnight, then buff lightly with sandpaper between layers. Took three coats to get that slick shine back.
Let it cure for two whole days before moving stuff back in. Stepped on it Saturday morning in clean socks. Smoooooth. Like fresh ice on a skating rink. No more splinters, no sticky patches. Felt like walking on new money.
