Decided to tackle installing hardwood flooring in my garage-turned-half-court after watching too many NBA highlights. My back’s still sore from carrying all those maple planks!
Getting Started
First hit YouTube for tutorials while nursing coffee. Realized I’d need way more tools than just my dusty hammer. Borrowed Ed’s table saw and rented this massive floor nailer thingy.
Materials hunt went like:
- Dragged three buddies to the lumber yard at 7AM
- Argued about maple vs oak till the manager glared at us
- Ended up with 20 boxes of 3/4″ maple boards – way heavier than I thought!
- Forgot padding underlayment completely, had to make second trip
Prepping The Space
Swept concrete floor like crazy. Saw online about moisture checks, so I duct-taped a plastic sheet overnight. Woke up to condensation beads – uh oh. Spent whole Saturday spreading that tar-like sealant. Smelled awful but kept telling myself “gotta prevent buckling”.
Laid the foam padding rolls only to discover:
- My garage floor slanted toward the drain
- Cut pieces upside down twice
- Got static shocks every time I unrolled it
Actual Installation Mayhem
First row took three hours. Forgot about expansion gaps, had to restart. That damn floor nailer kept jamming – kicked it (gently) more than once. Real trick was figuring out tongue-and-groove angles. Broke three planks before I stopped hammering like Thor.
Midway chaos:
- Ran out of cleats at 9PM on Sunday
- Measurements went wonky near the free-throw line
- Ed showed up with pizza but mostly laughed at my crooked cuts
Finishing Touches
Sanding made everything fuzzy white. Used water-based finish because the smell wouldn’t kill my roses. Applied four coats with lambswool pad – felt fancy until I dripped on my sneakers. Biggest shock? How slippery it got! Almost wiped out testing my Kobe impression.
Final outcome? Looks nearly pro if you squint. Three-point line’s wobbly but nobody’s complained during our Thursday games. Worth every splinter and sore muscle!
