How I Finally Fixed That Awful Gym Floor
Got tired of tripping over busted tiles in my garage gym last month. Looked like a war zone after deadlift sessions. Said screw it – gonna replace the whole mess myself.
Step one was ripping out the old crap. Grabbed my utility knife and sliced through those cracked tiles. Peeled ’em up like stale bandaids. Found nasty mildew patches underneath – smelled like wet socks. Doused everything in vinegar cleaner and scraped with a putty knife till my arms burned.
Ordered rubber flooring rolls online. When they showed up? Damn things weighed more than my barbell. Had to:
- Unroll them in driveway to flatten
- Trace my weight rack legs with chalk
- Hack out shapes with garden shears
Actual installation was hell. Tried laying the first roll – crooked as my uncle’s teeth. Redid it three times sweating buckets. Then realized I’d cut the damn thing upside down. Almost threw my hammer through the window.
Finally got smart:
- Taped measuring strings across the floor
- Used carpenter’s chalk for straight lines
- Slapped double-sided carpet tape every 2 feet
Pro tip nobody tells you: Butt those rubber seams TIGHT. Left just 1mm gap like some YouTube video said. Wrong. Now dirt collects in the cracks. Shoulda smashed them flush.
After six hours fighting with utility knives and adhesive goo? My garage finally looks like a real gym. Still found three flaws next morning though:
- One corner’s lifting near the squat rack
- Got bubble under left platform
- Shears slipped – ugly notch by the dumbbells
Verdict: Looks decent from five feet away. Can actually do burpees without eating concrete. Still might redo the corners come winter. Next time? Paying the damn professionals.
