The Mess I Found

Last week, our community volleyball court’s pine wood floor looked like it lost a fight with a pack of angry badgers. Deep scratches, splinters sticking up everywhere – a total hot mess. Players were complaining big time about slipping and scraping their knees. Figured it was time to put my “weekend warrior” hat on and tackle this beast myself. Grabbed my work boots and headed over early Saturday morning, coffee in hand.

Getting My Hands Dirty

First things first: clear the dang court. Swept off all the loose dirt, leaves, and some sad-looking tape residue. Couldn’t believe how grubby it was under there. Started poking around with a flathead screwdriver, hunting for loose boards. Found three near the net jumping around like they wanted to escape. Hammered those suckers back down tight with some hefty galvanized nails I picked up from the local hardware store the day before. Heard that satisfying thunk when they sank flush.

Then came the nasty part: sanding. Rented this heavy-duty floor sander – thing looked like a dinosaur. Stuffed plugs in my ears, strapped on the dust mask, and went to war with that rough surface. Went at it with coarse grit paper first, moving like a slow tortoise in rows. My arms felt like jelly! Switched to medium, then fine grit, watching all those gouges and splinters disappear. Clouds of dust everywhere – looked like a snowstorm hit the court! Hosed it all down after, let it dry overnight. Next day, I got on my hands and knees with a pole sander for the tricky corners the big machine missed. Had to treat some stubborn stains with a wood cleaner too – that stuff smelled sharp.

The Finishing Touch

Time for the magic sauce: the sealer. Wanted something tough since folks stomp all over this court. Went for a matte, water-based acrylic sealer. Applied it thick with a roller, working in small sections. Felt like painting a giant floor puzzle! Did two full coats, letting it dry rock-solid between each one. Patience ain’t easy when it looks so darn good almost done. Finally, painted crisp new boundary lines with stencils and super durable court marking paint. Took forever to line ’em up straight!

Done and Dusted!

Let everything cure for a solid two days – longest wait ever! Finally peeled off the blue tape yesterday. Result? Smooth as butter. Feet glide like they’re on ice, but grip like glue when you need it for a jump. Players tried it last night – zero splinters, zero slipping. Just solid wood playing nice. Best part? Watching them slide across that surface with big goofy grins. Smell of fresh pine and cleaner beats mildew any day. Another Saturday project in the books!
