Always hated dragging that stupid folding dance floor around for our maple practice sessions. Floors would pop apart mid-spin, nearly broke my neck last month. Decided to build something solid that doesn’t weigh a ton.
Stuff I Grabbed:
- Cheap pine boards from Home Depot scrap pile
- Random black rug scraps (free behind carpet store)
- Wood glue I found in my garage from 2015
- Used L-brackets from old Ikea shelf
Started by cutting those warped pine boards into squares. Measured wrong twice—blamed the rusty tape measure. Sanded the splinters off while coughing up sawdust. Glued the rug bits underneath for grip. Looked like Frankenstein’s floor when the glue oozed out everywhere.
Big Mistake Round One
Tried linking squares with shoelaces. Absolute garbage. Squares flipped when I jumped, face almost met concrete. Threw the laces in the trash can so hard it tipped over.
Dug through my junk drawer and found those dusty L-brackets. Screwed ‘em sideways to connect the squares. Tested by stomping like an angry gorilla. Held up! Added more screws because why not. Now it clicks like Lego when I snap ‘em together.
Why This Sucks Less
- No more tripping on loose panels during spins
- Rolls up like a burrito for storage
- Spilled coffee? Wipes clean (unlike my last rug)
Did it cost more than buying a pro floor? Hell no. Is it perfect? Nope—that one square still wobbles. But took it to practice yesterday and nobody died. That’s a win in my book.
