Okay, so I had this idea to make some cushions, you know, for outdoor seating. But not just any cushions. I wanted something that looked cool and was kinda unique. I thought, “Why not combine volleyballs with some nice wood?” Birch timber seemed like a good choice – it’s light-colored and looks pretty sturdy.

First, I gathered my materials. This was the fun part…scrounging around! I found some old volleyballs, some were deflated, some were okay. I actually liked the different looks, gave them some character.
- Old Volleyballs (various states of wear and tear!)
- Birch Timber (I got this from a local lumber place)
- Some heavy-duty fabric (for the underside of the cushions)
- Foam padding (because, comfort!)
- Strong adhesive (gotta hold it all together)
- Basic tools: saw, scissors, maybe a staple gun
Next, I started working on the wood. I measured out the size I wanted the base of the cushions to be, then cut the birch timber into squares. I wasn’t too fussy about being perfectly precise, a bit of rough-around-the-edges adds to the charm, right?
Then came the tricky part: prepping the volleyballs. I cut them in half, which was harder than I thought! Those things are tough. Once I had the halves, I cleaned them up a bit, removing any loose bits and dirt.
After that, I stuffed the volleyball halves with the foam padding. I made sure it was packed in pretty tight, so it would be comfy to sit on. Then, I cut out circles of the heavy-duty fabric, slightly larger than the wood squares. This fabric would go on the bottom, to protect the wood and provide a bit of grip.
The assembly time had arrived. First I glued fabric on the bottom of the birch timber.
Finally, I glued the stuffed volleyball halves onto the birch timber squares. I used plenty of adhesive, and I pressed down hard to make sure they were really stuck on. I even used some heavy books to weigh them down while the glue dried.
The Final Result
They actually turned out pretty cool! They’re definitely unique, and they’re surprisingly comfortable. The volleyballs give a bit of a bouncy feel, and the birch wood makes them look rustic and kinda stylish. A bit of a pain to make, honestly, but worth it in the end. They’re a real conversation starter, that’s for sure!
