Why I Tried DIY Flooring

Always watched those satisfying flooring videos online. Got this volleyball pad idea for my backyard space. Saw professional installation quotes? Way pricier than I imagined. Thought “how hard can it be?” Ordered interlocking wooden planks online. Big mistake right there.

Day One Disaster

Unpacked the planks feeling confident. First problem popped up immediately. Ground wasn’t level at all like the tutorials assumed. Used my kids’ building blocks to prop things up. Stabbed my thumb three times hammering connectors. Drew blood before lunchtime. The boards kept separating sideways when I walked on them – so wobbly!

What Went Wrong:

  • Spent $80 extra on leveling sand
  • Cracked two planks forcing misaligned joints
  • Realized I needed three more tools halfway through

Switching Gears

Gave up after four hours of sweaty frustration. Called neighbor Tim who does construction. He came over laughing at my lopsided mess. Showed me the pro tricks:

Used moisture barrier paper first thing. Cut planks with circular saw like butter. Had this rubber mallet thing that locked joints perfectly. His secret? Installing diagonally across corners instead of straight rows – way more stable. Done in two hours flat.

Final Reality Check

DIY cost me $300 materials + wasted weekend. Cracked planks can’t be returned. My attempt looks drunk – gaps everywhere. Tim charged $450 total for flawless finish. Still hurts my pride but lesson learned: Some things need muscle memory I don’t have. That satisfying installation video? Probably edited out all the swearing.

Now my volleyball pad? Playable but ugly. Kids call it the “rollercoaster court” cause the ball bounces crazy. Might redo it next year… professionally this time.
