Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea for a while, and today I finally got around to trying it out. It involves volleyballs, cushions, and this cool hevea timber I found. The idea? Making some kind of… I don’t know… funky seating? Let’s see how it went.

Gathering the Stuff

First things first, I needed to get all my materials together. I had these old volleyballs lying around that I never use, a few cushions I wasn’t particularly attached to, and that hevea timber I mentioned. I think I got the timber from some old project… can’t quite remember. It’s really smooth, which is nice.

  • Old Volleyballs (I had 3)
  • Some Cushions (About 4)
  • Hevea Timber planks
  • Usual tools, screws etc…

Chopping and Screwing

Next up, I start working to make the timber into a frame, because…well, everythings going to need some support right?. I measured some simple square shape out, and started chopping the timbers into the proper sizes I marked.

After I finished the cutting, I had to put them together. Using screws, and L-brackets, I pieced together all the timber bit by bit, until I had something that looks like a simple square frame.

The Volleyball Part

This is where it got a little tricky. I wanted to somehow incorporate the volleyballs into the design, almost like they were supporting the cushions. I tried a few things, like just placing them under the cushions, but they kept rolling around. Not ideal.

Adding Support

I figured I needed to create some kind of “nest” for the volleyballs to sit in. so they don’t roll around. So,I took some leftover timber pieces and screwed them onto the frame, that formed small “cradles”.

Putting It All Together

After creating the wooden cradles, I put the volleyballs inside. I then put the cushions on top of them.

Now it looks more stable, and the cushion don’t slide around that much.

Final Thoughts

So, yeah, that’s pretty much it. It’s… interesting. It’s definitely not the most comfortable thing I’ve ever sat on, but it’s got a certain quirky charm, I think. I might try experimenting with different cushion arrangements or maybe even different types of balls. It’s a work in progress, for sure!
