Okay, let’s get started on building that volleyball court! I’ve been wanting to set up a proper playing area in my backyard for ages, and I finally decided to tackle it. The plan? Use some sturdy batten timber and sleeper timbers to create a nice, level court. Here’s how the whole thing went down:

First things first, I measured out the area where I wanted the court. I went for a slightly smaller-than-regulation size ’cause, you know, it’s just for fun and my backyard isn’t exactly stadium-sized. Once I had the dimensions down, I marked the perimeter with some string and stakes. This gave me a clear visual of where I’d be working.

Next up, the digging. This was probably the most labor-intensive part. I dug out the entire marked area to a depth of about 6-8 inches. The goal was to get rid of all the grass and get down to a relatively level base. I used my wheel barrow to carry the dirt, it’s super useful!

Then, I used my purchased sleeper timbers. I placed the sleeper timbers around and alone the perimeter of the hole. Then, I filled the timbers gap use dirt.

Laying the Foundation

With the hole prepped, it was time to bring in the sleeper timbers. These big boys would form the outer boundary of the court. I carefully positioned them around the perimeter, making sure they were nice and snug against each other. I used a level to ensure they were, well, level! A wonky court wouldn’t be much fun to play on.

After making sure the sleeper timbers is solid, I started install batten timbers. I screwed them into the sleeper timbers to make them steady.

Finally, I bought some sand and put it inside the court.I made sure the surface is flat using those batten timbers as guide.

And that’s pretty much it! It took a good chunk of a weekend, and my back definitely felt it, but it was totally worth it. Now I’ve got a sweet little volleyball court right in my backyard. Time to invite some friends over and bump, set, and spike!
