Okay, here’s my blog post about setting up that portable wooden volleyball court:

Alright, so I’ve always wanted a decent volleyball court I could set up and take down easily. I finally decided to just go for it and build one myself. I went with the “batten volleyball birch portable wooden flooring” idea, mostly because it sounded cool, and birch seemed like a good, sturdy wood.

Getting Started

First thing I did was measure out the space I had available. I’m not building a regulation-size court here, just something big enough for some casual games. After I got my dimensions, I sketched out a rough plan. I’m no artist, so it was pretty basic, just lines and numbers, really.

Gathering Supplies

Then it was off to the stores. Man I shopped at all the home improvement stores I know. I grabbed a bunch of birch planks. I made sure they were all the same size and thickness. That was important. I also picked up the battens – these are the strips of wood that go underneath and hold the planks together. Got some heavy-duty wood screws, too. Don’t want this thing falling apart mid-game!

The Build

I started by laying out the battens on the ground. I spaced them out evenly, making sure they were parallel. This was kinda like building a giant wooden grid. Then, I started placing the birch planks on top, perpendicular to the battens.

This is where the screws came in. I screwed each plank down into each batten. It took a while, and my back was definitely feeling it, but I wanted to make sure it was solid. I used a power drill, obviously. Doing that by hand would have taken forever!

  • Lay down the battens.
  • Place the birch planks.
  • Screw it tight.

Putting it All Together

I built the court in sections. I figured that would make it way easier to move and store. Each section was basically a small, independent platform. To connect them, I used some metal brackets and bolts. I just lined up the sections and bolted them together. Pretty simple, actually.

The Finished Product

After a few days of work, I had a fully functional, portable volleyball court! It wasn’t perfect, some of the planks were a little uneven, but it was sturdy and looked pretty darn good. I’ve already had a few games on it, and it works great! The best part is, when I’m done, I can just unbolt the sections and stack them up in the garage. Way better than having a permanent court taking up all that space.

Overall, I’m super happy with how it turned out. It was a fun project, and now I’ve got a cool volleyball court whenever I want it. If you’ve got some basic woodworking skills (and a strong back!), I’d definitely recommend giving it a try.
