Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea for a while, and today I finally got around to actually doing it. I wanted to see if I could combine a few different materials in a, shall we say, unique way. We’re talking keel, volleyball, birch, and timber. Yeah, it’s a weird combo, but stick with me.

The Starting Point

First, I grabbed an old volleyball I had lying around. It was pretty deflated and beat up, which was perfect. I didn’t want to ruin a good one! Then, I went out to the shed and found some scrap birch timber. It was leftover from a previous project, just some rough-cut pieces.

Putting it Together

My initial thought was to use the timber as a sort of “keel,” like on a boat. So, I took the volleyball and carefully sliced it open along one of the seams. It was kinda gross, to be honest, all that old, dusty air puffing out.

Next, I measured and cut the birch timber into a shape that would fit inside the deflated volleyball. I wanted it to be long and somewhat pointed, again, like a keel. I’m no carpenter, so it wasn’t pretty, but it was functional.

I sanded down the edges of the timber a bit, just to make sure there were no splinters that might puncture the volleyball again. Then, I carefully inserted the timber “keel” inside the deflated ball. It was a tight fit, which was what I wanted.

The Result

Once the timber was in place,I used some strong, waterproof tape that can fit well and started to bring my masterpiece to life.

Honestly, it looks…interesting. It’s definitely a conversation starter. Does it have any practical use? Probably not. But it was a fun little experiment, and it got me thinking about other ways to combine materials in unexpected ways. Maybe I’ll try using a basketball next time… or a bowling ball!
