Okay, here’s my blog post about my “cushions, volleyball, sleeper, timber” project:

So, the other day I had this kinda crazy idea. I’ve got this old, beat-up timber futon frame, right? It’s solid, but super uncomfortable. My kid loves playing volleyball, and we had some extra cushions lying around. A lightbulb went off – I could probably combine all that stuff to make something way better.

First, I dragged that heavy timber frame out of the garage. Seriously, that thing weighs a ton! I gave it a good once-over, checking for any loose screws or splintered bits. Found a couple, so I grabbed my screwdriver and tightened everything up. Good as new(ish)!

Getting the Cushions Ready

Next, I gathered all the cushions. We had a bunch of old throw pillows and a couple of larger seat cushions from an old patio set. I laid them all out on the floor to see what I was working with.

  • I decided to use the bigger cushions for the base, figuring they’d provide the most support.
  • The throw pillows, I figured, would be good for back support and, you know, general comfy-ness.

The Volleyball “Padding”

This is where the volleyballs come in. I had a few deflated ones. My thinking was, they’d be perfect for adding some extra padding and maybe even a bit of a rounded shape to the backrest. I partially inflated two of them – not too much, just enough so they had some give but weren’t rock-hard.

I stuffed them in between the bigger cushions and the back of the timber frame. Kinda wedged them in there real good so they wouldn’t move around too much.

Arranging and Testing

After that, it was just a matter of arranging the cushions to make it look, well, not totally ridiculous. I played around with the placement for a while, moving the throw pillows and adjusting the bigger cushions until it felt reasonably comfortable.

My kiddo was my official tester. They jumped on it, lounged on it, and even pretended to take a nap. The verdict? “Way better than before, Dad!” Success!

It’s not exactly a designer piece, but it’s a whole lot more comfortable than that bare timber frame. Plus, it was a fun little project that used up some stuff we already had. I’m calling it a win!
