Okay, so I’ve been wanting to redo the flooring in my workshop for, like, forever. It was just bare concrete, cold, and not exactly inspiring. I saw this idea online about using plywood and battens to make a sort of “dancing floor,” and I thought, “Why not?”

First, I cleared out the entire space. This took longer than I expected, honestly. I had so much junk piled up!

Then, I laid down some plastic sheeting as a vapor barrier. I live in a pretty humid area, so this was a must.

Next up, the battens. I used simple 2x2s, spacing them about 16 inches apart. I screwed them down into the concrete, making sure everything was level. This was a bit of a pain, but my trusty laser level helped a lot.

  • Measure and cut the 2x2s to the right length.
  • Position the battens.
  • Screw them into place!

After that, it was time for the plywood. I went with 3/4 inch plywood because I wanted something sturdy.I staggered the joints of plywood sheets for the better strengh.

I cut the plywood sheets to size, making sure they fit snugly between the battens. A circular saw made this pretty easy.

Then, the really tedious part: screwing the plywood down to the battens. So. Many. Screws. My wrist was definitely feeling it by the end!

Once all the plywood was down, I filled any gaps and screw holes with wood filler. After it dried, I gave the whole floor a good sanding to make it smooth. You can chose wether to sand it or not!

The Result

Finally, I applied a couple of coats of polyurethane to protect the wood and give it a nice finish. And that’s it! It took a couple of weekends, but I’m super happy with how it turned out. It’s so much nicer to work on than the old concrete floor, and it actually does have a bit of “give” to it, which is nice on the feet.

If I were doing this work for others,I may chose to apply some glue before I screw,But I am just doing this for myself,so I skip the glue part.
