Alright, let’s talk about my little adventure with batten dancing parquet – basically, putting together a wooden floor. It sounded fancy, but honestly, it was more like a giant jigsaw puzzle than anything else.
First things first, I cleared out the room. Everything had to go. It was a total pain, but you gotta have a blank canvas, right?
Next, I checked the subfloor. This is super important because if that’s messed up, your pretty new floor will be messed up too. Mine was concrete, and luckily, it was pretty level. Just a few spots needed a bit of self-leveling compound. I poured that stuff on, smoothed it out, and waited for it to dry. That was a boring day.
The Materials
- The wooden parquet pieces (obviously!)
- Batten, these are thin strips of wood.
- Some serious wood glue.
- A hammer and some nails.
- A saw.
getting ready with batten. I cut the batten into pieces and create a frame and some support structure, then I fixed them on the floor with glue and nails.
Then came the fun part – or so I thought. I started laying out the parquet pieces, trying to get that “dancing” pattern right. It looked so easy in the pictures! Let me tell you, it wasn’t. I spent a good hour just moving pieces around, trying to figure out the best way to start.
Once I had a rough idea, I started gluing. I applied glue to the back of each piece and stuck it down onto the batten, making sure it was snug against the others. This part was slow going. Lots of pressing, tapping with the hammer, and wiping up excess glue.
The cutting… oh, the cutting. When I got to the edges of the room, I had to cut the parquet pieces to fit. My saw skills are… let’s just say they’re “developing.” There were a few mishaps, and a few pieces that ended up in the “oops” pile.
But, slowly but surely, the floor started to take shape. It was like watching a magic trick, only I was the sweaty, slightly frustrated magician. I kept laying, gluing, and cutting until the whole room was covered.
Finally, after what felt like forever, I was done. I stood back and looked at my handiwork. It wasn’t perfect, there were a few gaps here and there, but it was my floor. And honestly, it looked pretty darn good.
The last step was letting the glue dry completely. Another waiting game! After that, I give the whole thing a good cleaning, and now the room looks totally different, It was a lot of work, but totally worth it in the end.
