Okay, here’s my blog post about working with batten, basketball, soft maple, and timber:

Alright, so the other day I had this project – putting up some soft maple timber for a basketball court, well, more like a practice area. I decided to use battens because, well, they seemed like the easiest way to go. Let me tell you, it was a bit of a learning curve, but totally doable!

Getting Started

First things first, I gathered all my materials. I had a bunch of soft maple timber – beautiful stuff, by the way – and then the battens, which are basically just thinner strips of wood. I also made sure I had my trusty tools: a saw (a circular saw made things way faster), a drill, screws, a level, a measuring tape, and of course, safety glasses. Gotta protect those peepers!

The Process

I started by measuring the wall where I wanted to install the timber. This was crucial because I needed to figure out how many pieces of timber I needed and how to space them evenly. Once I had my measurements, I used the measuring tape and level to mark out where the battens would go. The level is super important here – you don’t want a wonky basketball court!

Next, I pre-drilled holes in the battens. This helps prevent the wood from splitting when you screw them into the wall. Then, I held the batten up against the wall, lined it up with my marks, and screwed it in. I repeated this process until all the battens were securely attached.

  • Measure twice, cut once! Seriously, this old saying is a lifesaver. Double-checking your measurements will save you a lot of headaches (and wasted wood).
  • Use a level! Nobody wants a slanted court.
  • Pre-drill those holes! It really does make a difference.

With the battens in place, it was time to attach the soft maple timber. I placed the First section of timber, applied adhesive, and then used some nails to attach the timber. And the same operation I repeated until finished.

The Final Result

After all the timber was up, I stood back and admired my handiwork. It looked pretty darn good, if I do say so myself! The soft maple had a really nice, smooth finish, perfect for bouncing a basketball. And the battens gave it a clean, professional look.

It wasn’t the quickest project, but it was definitely rewarding. There’s something satisfying about building something with your own two hands. Plus, now I have a sweet little basketball practice area. Time to work on my jump shot!
