Okay, so the other day I decided to tackle a project I’d been putting off – putting down some batten basketball rubber tree assembling wooden flooring in my spare room. Figured it’d be a good workout and a nice upgrade.
Getting Started
First things first, I cleared out the room completely. Everything out! This gave me a clean slate to work with. Then I made sure the subfloor was clean. Just some regular sweeping and a quick once-over to make sure there weren’t any nails or anything sticking up.
Laying the Battens
Next up, the battens. These are like the little support beams for the flooring. I laid them out, spaced evenly apart. The instructions had a guide for how far apart they should be, so I just followed that. I used a measuring tape and chalk to make sure, and draw the lines.
- Check the space
- Measure
- Draw the lines
Then I screwed the battens down into the subfloor. Nothing fancy, just making sure they were secure and level. I had to use a wood drill and drill bit to drill holes, the floor was very hard, I spent a lot of time on this.
Assembling the Flooring
After all that preparation came time for flooring, The flooring itself came in these interlocking pieces. Kinda like a giant jigsaw puzzle. I started in one corner and worked my way across the room, clicking the pieces together. It was actually pretty satisfying to hear that “click” and know it was locked in place. I used a rubber mallet and some tools to knock some parts.
Every now and then, I’d hit a snag where a piece needed to be cut to fit around a doorframe or something. For that, I used a saw. I measured twice (always!) and cut once. Better safe than sorry, right?
Finishing Up
Finally, after a good few hours of work, the whole floor was down! I put some trim around the edges to cover up the gaps and give it a nice, finished look. Screwed those in too, just like the battens.
Honestly, it was a bit tiring, but super rewarding to see the finished product. Looks way better than the old carpet that was there before. Plus, I saved some money doing it myself! Now I have to move the stuff in!
