So I finally got around to tackling that beat-up basketball court in my backyard last weekend. Been staring at those warped planks all summer, you know? Decided it’s now or never to replace that worn-out surface with proper hardwood.

Getting Started

First thing Saturday morning, I hauled my toolbox out there. Measured the whole court twice cause I ain’t trusting my old tape measure. Grabbed:

  • Two dozen tongue-and-groove maple planks
  • Three gallons of polyurethane finish
  • That heavy nail gun my neighbor lent me
  • Enough coffee to power a small army

Tore out the old floorboards first – man, some were rotted straight through. Found like three mouse nests underneath! Took me half the morning just clearing debris and pressure-washing the base concrete.

The Real Work Begins

Started laying planks from center court outwards. Had to hammer every single piece into place cause the grooves were crazy tight. Sweating buckets by lunchtime when I realized I messed up the grain pattern on row seven. Had to pry up six boards with a crowbar while swearing at squirrels.

The nail gun jammed every ten shots, obviously. Ended up hand-nailing the corners like some caveman. Near sunset, my knees were screaming but I finally got all boards down. Almost kissed the last plank.

Finishing Touches

Sanded everything Sunday morning – sawdust in places dust shouldn’t be. Applied the first coat of poly with this lamb’s wool applicator I saw on YouTube. Looked amazing… until gnats decided to kamikaze into the wet finish. Picked out twenty-seven bug corpses with tweezers like a mad scientist.

Three coats later, the court’s shining like an NBA arena. Well, more like a high school gym, but I’ll take it. Test-dribbled my old Spalding – that maple surface sings now! Just need to repaint the lines next weekend when this poly fully cures.

Final thoughts? My back’s still mad at me, but dang – nothing beats the sound of a basketball popping on fresh hardwood. Worth every splinter and bug funeral.
