Okay, here’s my blog post about assembling wooden flooring with cushions for volleyball, written from a personal, hands-on perspective:
Alright, so I had this crazy idea. I wanted a practice area for volleyball, but I also wanted it to be, you know, comfortable. My knees aren’t what they used to be. So, I thought: cushioned volleyball court! I decided to go with wooden flooring because, well, it looks nice, and I figured I could make it work.
First, I cleared out the space. This was probably the most boring part. Just moving furniture, sweeping, and making sure everything was level. Nothing exciting there.
Next, I laid down the underlayment. I got some of those thick foam mats, the kind you see in kids’ play areas. I figured they’d provide a good base for cushioning. I had to cut them to size with a utility knife – that took a bit of time, and my cuts weren’t exactly perfect, but hey, it’s the underlayer, no one will see it!
After that was sorted, it was time for the actual wooden flooring.. I got these interlocking pine planks. They were pretty cheap, and I liked the light color. Now, the interlocking part? That was a bit of a pain. Some of them clicked together easily, others… not so much. I had to use a rubber mallet (and a lot of grunting) to get them to fit snugly.
Here the steps that i do for actual wooden flooring:
- Get a rubber mallet
- Try to click the interlocking planks together
- Give a lot of force to fit it snugly
I worked in sections, slowly expanding the wooden area across the foam. I kept checking to make sure everything was level (as much as possible, anyway). There were a few spots where the planks didn’t quite line up perfectly, but I figured it wouldn’t be a huge deal. I’m not building a professional court here, just a place to bump the ball around.
Finally, I finished the whole thing! It took me most of the weekend, and I was pretty sore by the end, but it was worth it. The floor looked pretty good, all things considered. And the best part? It was actually cushioned. I could jump and land without feeling like my knees were going to explode.
I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s not perfect – there are a few uneven spots, and the wood isn’t exactly high-quality – but it does the job. I can practice my volleyball moves without destroying my joints. Success!
