Okay, so I’ve been wanting to create a really cool dance space in my spare room for a while now. I saw this idea online about “cushions dancing hevea portable wooden flooring” and I thought, “That sounds perfect!” It seemed like a good way to get a sprung floor without, you know, tearing up my whole house. So, I decided to give it a try.

Getting Started

First, I measured the area I wanted to cover. It wasn’t the whole room, just a decent-sized section. I wanted enough space to really move, but not take over the entire room. I jotted down the length and width, good old-fashioned pen and paper style.

Gathering Supplies

Next, I needed to find the stuff. This was a little tricky. I searched all over for “hevea wood,” which apparently is rubberwood, and it is pretty strong. I ended up getting some pre-cut wooden panels from a local hardware store. They weren’t specifically “hevea,” but the guy at the store said it was a similar type of wood and should be just fine for what I needed. Then for cushioning, I went with some closed cell foam, it is nice and soft.

The Build

This is where the real fun began (and maybe a little frustration, to be honest!). I laid down the foam first. Just rolled it out and cut it to size with a box cutter. It was pretty easy, actually.

Then came the wood. I placed the wooden panels on top of the foam, making sure they were snug against each other. I didn’t glue anything down, because I wanted this to be “portable,” remember? The idea is that the weight of the wood and the friction with the foam would keep everything in place.

Testing it Out

Once it was all laid out, I had to test it! I put on some music and started moving. It felt pretty good! Definitely better than dancing on the hard floor. The foam gave it a nice bounce, and the wood felt solid under my feet.

  • I did a few jumps and turns.
  • I even tried some more complicated moves.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s not perfect, of course. The panels do shift a little bit when I’m doing really vigorous moves. But for the most part, it stays put and provides a much better dance surface than I had before. And the best part is, I can roll it up and put it away if I need to use the room for something else! It was pretty affordable, and it only took me an afternoon to put together. Definitely a win in my book!
